The Background Adjustments panel groups tools for refining plain backdrops, replacing the background, replacing the sky, and simulating depth-of-field blur. This article follows the panel order shown in Evoto.
Background Adjustments
Use this section to clean and unify the original background before replacing it or making additional scene adjustments.
Solid Backdrop Refinement
Solid Backdrop Refinement focuses on studio-style or plain backgrounds that need cleanup.
- Distractions Removal: removes small distracting elements or irregular marks from the backdrop area.
- Clean Backdrop: smooths uneven backdrop texture for a tidier, more consistent background.
- Smart Removal: provides a guided cleanup option when Evoto detects areas that can be cleaned automatically.
- Unify Lighting: evens out uneven background brightness and helps the backdrop look more uniform.
- Color Banding Removal: reduces visible banding or stepped color transitions in the background.
Background Refinement
- Background Enhancement: improves the appearance of the background while keeping attention on the subject.
Backdrop Changer
Backdrop Changer replaces the existing background with an asset image or a solid color and provides controls to blend the subject naturally into the new scene.
Choose a Backdrop
- Recommended: uses Evoto’s built-in background recommendations.
- My Backdrops: lets you upload and reuse your own background images. Supported formats:
.jpeg,.jpg,.png,.gif,.tiff,.bmp. Maximum file size:20 MB. - Assets: browses background image assets.
- Solid Color: replaces the background with a single color. You can pick a color, save custom colors locally, and reuse them later.
If shown in your panel, AI Background Fusion helps the subject and the replacement background blend together more naturally.
Preserved Area
- Subject: keeps only the main subject.
- Subject and Related Objects: keeps the subject and closely associated items.
- Subject + Related + Non-Connected Objects: keeps the subject, related items, and nearby separate objects.
Fill Region
- Original Image: fills the background based on the original uncropped image.
- Cropped Image: fills the background based on the visible cropped area.
Fill Mode
- Center Fill: scales the background proportionally to fill the frame.
- Center Alignment: centers the background without stretching it.
- Stretch Fill: stretches the background to fill the area.
Background Controls
- Blend Mode: controls how the selected background blends with the original image information.
- Edge Adjustments: refines transition areas around the subject, especially around hair and fine edges.
- Opacity: controls the visibility of the replacement background.
- Size: scales the background image.
- Vertical and Horizontal: reposition the background within the frame.
- Blur: softens the replacement background.
- Remove Spill: reduces unwanted color spill from the original background that may reflect onto the subject.
- Floor Reflection: adds a studio-style floor reflection to help the subject sit more naturally in the new background.
Original Shadow
- AI Retain Shadows: keeps the original shadow information for a more realistic result after background replacement.
AI Retain Shadows and Add Shadow can be used together when needed.
Add Shadow
Use Add Shadow to create new shadows that match the replacement background.
- None: turns off added shadows.
- Soft: creates a diffused shadow, suitable for studio-style lighting.
- Hard: creates a stronger, more directional shadow.
- Drop: creates a flatter shadow style for graphic or product-style looks.
Shadow Controls
- Opacity: adjusts shadow density.
- Shadow Blur: softens the shadow edge.
- Gradient: increases the fade across the shadow.
- Blend Mode: controls how the shadow mixes with the replacement background.
Sky Replacement
Use Sky Replacement to swap the sky and then match the rest of the image to the new sky.
If Evoto cannot identify a replaceable sky area in the current photo, the panel may show No skies detected.
Main Controls
- Flip Horizontal: flips the selected sky horizontally.
- Edge Transition: softens the transition between the sky and the rest of the scene.
- Temp, Tint, Saturation, and Brightness: adjust the look of the replacement sky.
- Sky Blur: softens the sky.
- Opacity: controls how strongly the replacement sky appears.
Human & Scenery Adjustment
- Scenery Color (Match Sky): adjusts scenery tones to better match the replacement sky.
- Human Color (Match Sky): adjusts subject tones to better match the replacement sky.
Water Reflection Adjustment
- Reflection Adjustment: refines how the replacement sky appears in water reflections.
- Water Blur: controls the softness of the reflected sky in water.
Lens Blur
Lens Blur simulates optical depth of field so the subject stands out more clearly from the background. You can use it to add a portrait-style shallow depth effect without changing the subject itself.
Main Controls
- AI Lens Blur: turns the effect on and lets Evoto build an initial depth estimate for the photo.
- Blur Amount: controls the strength of the blur.
Bokeh
- Choose a bokeh shape such as Circle, Circle 2, 5-Blade, 8-Blade, or Cat’s Eye.
- Boost: strengthens the bokeh highlight effect.
Focus Range
- Use Focus Range to define which depth area stays sharp and which areas are blurred.
- Depending on the image, you can rely on Evoto’s subject focus detection or refine the range manually.
- Visualize Depth: displays the depth map so you can inspect the focus transition more clearly.
Manual Refinement
Use Manual Refinement to correct areas where the automatic depth separation needs adjustment.
Notes
- Transparent images are not supported.
- When you switch to certain other editing tools, the Lens Blur preview may be temporarily hidden to keep editing responsive.
- Lens Blur settings can be saved in presets and synced across images.
