How to Master Skin Retouching for Natural Results

Evoto’s Skin Retouching feature set provides advanced tools for refining skin details and achieving natural, polished results. By understanding the function of each tool, you can achieve subtle enhancements or more dramatic transformations.

The Core Smoothing Tools

Evoto offers a variety of tools for smoothing skin, each using different technologies to achieve a unique result.

Dodge & Burn Techniques

These tools subtly enhance the shape and depth of facial features while preserving natural highlights and shadows. It is recommended to combine them for the best results.

  • Even with Dodge & Burn: This tool automatically lightens and darkens targeted areas of the face to effectively smooth wrinkles, reduce blemishes, and correct uneven tones. It delivers a clean, natural complexion that accommodates different skin types.
  • Sculpt with Dodge & Burn: This tool refines lighting and contour definition to enhance facial dimensionality. It includes two adjustable sliders:
    • Facial Features Slider: Emphasizes features like eyes, lips, and nose to enhance depth and definition.
    • Facial Contours Slider: Accentuates the bone structure and overall shape of the face for a more sculpted look.
  • Textured Smoothing: A more subtle Dodge & Burn tool that refines skin tone and structure while preserving natural texture. It’s ideal for smoothing imperfections while maintaining a realistic, three-dimensional appearance.

Frequency Separation

This classic skin retouching method separates the skin into high-frequency (texture) and low-frequency (tone and color) layers for fine-tuned control. This technology is the basis for several of Evoto’s skin-smoothing tools.

  • Face Skin Smoothing: Smooths facial skin by targeting the low-frequency layer (tone and color) while preserving details in the high-frequency layer (texture). Adjust the slider carefully to maintain a natural look and avoid an overly airbrushed appearance.
  • Body Skin Smoothing: Applies the same frequency separation technology to the body, making it ideal for refining skin’s appearance across larger areas and ensuring consistency throughout the image.
  • High & Low Frequency Sub-sliders: For even more control, sub-sliders are available to let you manually enhance or soften skin texture (High Frequency) or control smoothness and tonal balance (Low Frequency). This is recommended for portraits with even exposure.

Adding and Refining Texture

The Skin Texture Adjustments feature offers additional control over the skin’s texture, allowing you to add or modify texture details for a more natural and realistic finish.

  • Glossiness: Adjusts the brightness of existing highlights on the skin to enhance or reduce light reflection.
  • Texture: Controls the visibility of skin texture. Lower values smooth texture; higher values enhance it.
  • Clarity: Adds or reduces sharpness in the skin texture for more or less definition.

Skin Texture Presets

Evoto provides three skin texture presets to quickly apply different finishes:

  • Satin Preset: Reduces glossiness for a soft, natural look.
  • Matte Preset: Adjusts gloss, texture, and clarity to create a refined, less reflective appearance.
  • Dewy Preset: Increases glossiness to give the skin a radiant, luminous finish.

Advanced Color & Tone Adjustments

Evoto provides dedicated tools for fine-tuning skin color, tone, and radiance, each with a different purpose.

Select Skin Tone

This tool allows you to adjust and harmonize the overall skin and facial feature tones. It is ideal for color correction or creative changes.

  • Skin Tone: Choose from eight preset tones and adjust using the slider.
  • Temperature: Warms or cools the selected skin tone.
  • Tint: Adjusts redness. Ideal for correcting over-red skin tones.
  • Note: This tool adjusts the entire skin tone while also modifying the color of facial features to maintain visual consistency. It is best used alongside AI Unify Face/Body Complexion.

Skin Radiance

This feature brightens and enhances the glow of the skin while preserving the integrity of facial color.

  • Functionality: It increases the brightness and clarity of the skin, giving it a more luminous appearance without altering the brightness or color of key facial features.
  • Use Case: Best for improving dull or uneven skin tones when you want to add vibrance without disrupting the subject’s natural facial coloring.

Rosy Complexion

This tool adds or reduces redness in the skin for a healthier appearance. Use the slider in either direction to subtly increase rosiness or minimize excessive redness.

The Precision of Manual Control

For precise control over your skin edits, Evoto offers both manual tools and targeted masks.

  • Manual Tuning Pen: This tool allows you to manually apply or remove smoothing effects in specific areas. Use it to retain natural texture where needed, or to target blemishes individually.
  • Local Mask Adjustments: For finer control, you can use Local Mask > Color Adjustments to manually refine skin tone on a specific area. This tool allows targeted color edits on areas such as the Facial Skin, Body Skin, or All Skin.

By understanding the purpose of each tool and how to combine them, you can achieve professional, natural-looking skin in your photos.
