Connect to Camera (Tethering) Module

Evoto combines powerful portrait retouching with a professional tethered shooting workflow to enhance your photography efficiency.

Overview

  • Instant capture and viewing
With live view streaming, you can check your photos instantly within Evoto. Skip the traditional import process – your image appears immediately after the shutter is triggered.
  • Instant post-production
Apply presets in real-time during tethered shooting to streamline your workflow. Retouching can be completed as you shoot.

Starting Tethered Shooting

Method 1: From the Project Workspace

Click Create a New Project, then select Tethered Shooting to begin a new project directly.

Method 2: From the Picture Editing Workspace

Click the Tethered Shooting tab to access the tether shooting interface.

If no camera is connected, you’ll see a status message. Once a camera is connected, a dot will appear under the Tethered Shooting icon.

Currently, tethered shooting supports image capture only. Camera settings are displayed but cannot be modified in Evoto.

Triggering the Camera

Click the shutter button to take a photo directly from the Evoto interface.

Tethered Shooting Setup

Step 1: Capture Effect Settings

  • Sync with Previous
Apply the same effects used on the previous photo.

  • Presets
Choose a preset to automatically apply to each new image as it’s captured.

Raw / JPEG Format Filter

A format filter is available in the Import Settings for tethered shooting. This allows you to choose which file types are imported:

  • Options: JPEG and RAW

  • By default, both are enabled. If only one option is active, it cannot be disabled.

  • Hovering over a locked filter will display a tooltip explaining why it is disabled.

Step 2: Preview Settings

Choose how the preview behaves during tethered shooting:

  • Keep Current Selection (default)
Remain on your current image after a new one is captured.

  • Show Newest Capture Photo
Automatically switch to the most recently captured image.

Step 3: File Naming

Choose from four naming methods:

  • Original File Name

  • Capture Date – Original File Name

  • Custom File Name – Sequence

  • Clipboard Content – Sequence (ideal for tethering workflows)

Clipboard Content – Sequence uses text copied to your clipboard to name files, followed by a sequence number.

Only text is supported—image content will not be recognized.

The following symbols are not allowed in file names:
;, :, ^, *, <, >, ?, |
Including these will prevent file naming.

Step 4: Capture Storage Location

Click the save location to choose where original files are stored after capture.

Edited images still require you to select a file location during export.

Camera Connection Behavior

  • Evoto uses automatic connection for supported cameras – no manual steps required.

  • Once the camera is physically connected to the computer, tethering will activate automatically.

  • Click Disconnect to manually disconnect the camera from Evoto.

  • Some cameras may require a manual selection of connection mode on the camera itself.

Tether Shooting Settings

In Evoto

Go to Settings > Preferences > For Tethered Shooting to enable or disable automatic camera connection.

On Camera

Set the camera to Stay On / Do Not Auto Turn Off.

If your camera turns off automatically, Evoto will lose connection. Reconnect the USB cable if this happens.

Camera-specific settings may vary. Refer to the appropriate camera setup guide:

Tether Shooting Setup – FujiFilm

Tether Shooting Setup – Sony

Tethered Shooting Setup – Olympus Corporation

Tethered Shooting Setup – Canon

Tethered Shooting Setup – Nikon

Tethered Shooting Setup – Panasonic

Tethered Shooting Setup – Leica

Troubleshooting & Abnormal Situations

If automatic connection fails repeatedly:

  • Evoto will disable auto-connect and switch to manual connection mode.

  • Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable will prompt Evoto to retry automatic connection.

Possible Causes of Failure:

  • The camera is not supported. Check the Tether Shooting Supported Camera Models list or contact support@evoto.ai.

  • Another application is using the camera. Close any conflicting software.

  • Camera issue. Try:

    • Disconnecting the camera

    • Removing and reinserting the battery

    • Restarting the camera

  • USB cable or adapter hub may be unreliable. Use a direct connection or confirm that your hub supports data transfer (OTG approved).

  • Applications like Photos, Image Capture, or Preview may interfere. Close them to restore tether connection.

For any additional issues, contact support@evoto.ai or reach out through Evoto’s in-app customer service.
